This course is for potters with strong basic knowledge who want to progress into developing projects developing their skills in ceramics. This qualification consists of three units, which are portfolio evidenced. You will document each sessions activities in a sketchbook (or portfolio of work if you prefer) a course portfolio of evidence will form as you meet the learning outcomes, resulting in the learners gradually achieving the qualifications criteria throughout the course duration.

Course information

Learners will be taught how to build up a bust, developing musculature and expression in clay.

The course is made up of three units -

  • Explore Ceramic Resources
  • Explore craft ideas
  • create and present final piece of ceramic work

Throughout the units you will -

  • work as a group -
    • on the pottery wheels
    • creating cylinders and bowls
    • exploring decorating techniques using etching
    • slip decoration
    • glaze
    • underglaze
  • visit a gallery or museum for inspiration looking at -
    • surface decoration
    • textures
    • colours
    • shapes
    • forms
    • as well as using other sources of inspiration helping you to research a hand building project. Your tutor will lead you through the creative process as a group helping you to learn how to plan and design a creative project with the intention of learning how to build a bust in the next unit
  • be taught how to build up a bust, develop musculature and expression in clay, drawing upon your inspirations from unit 2 creating a beautiful unique sculpture

The course takes place over 30 weeks, learners take part in step-by-step tutorials learning how to form and sculp with clay in small/medium height scales. Throughout the creative process each learner will build a portfolio of evidence undertaking tasks each session. By the end of the course learners will develop the skills of design, research, development.

Adult learners will benefit from teaching and guidance from experienced staff who have good links to the local creative industries, and all will benefit from learning skills to support employment in the fashion industry.

You will gain the NCFE Level 1 Award in Creative Crafts qualification.

Entry requirements

  • You should have completed beginner/intermediate course.or have a good level of experience
  • You must be 19 or over to enrol on this course
  • You should be proficient at throwing and hand building
  • You should have a basic knowledge of written English
  • You should have access to a computer to complete assignments online
