You will explore and experience the wonder of Raku, develop projects that will be fired using glazes and horsehair in the Raku kilns.
This course aims to develop your Raku hand building skills and firing knowledge gaining a qualification as a result.
This is an outdoor course. Please wear sturdy outdoor footwear, avoid loose or trailing clothing, and ensure long hair is tied back for safety.
Course information
During this six-week course you will cover -
- the studio and equipment
- a Health and Safety induction
- an introduction to the wonder of Raku and make a pinch pot
- learning how to create clay tiles using craft equipment, with a group discussion on the horsehair technique
- creating a hand built ceramics piece learning how to create optimal work for the Raku process
- completing the project with refinement and decoration techniques including applying terra-sigulatta
- learning how to apply raku glazes and about the theory and history of Raku firing, including how to clean up your work and when and how to apply Kintsugi demonstration
- Raku day including the horsehair technique
You will gain a qualification in NCFE Entry 2 in Creative Crafts.
Entry requirements
- This course is suitable for those with little or very basic hand building knowledge who wish to develop new skills
- You must be 19 or over to enrol on this course
