Children from St Charles' VC Academy recently had the chance to step into the world of construction during an exciting visit to Hull Training and Adult Education’s (HTAE) Construction Centre
Organised in partnership with Houltons and Hull & East Yorkshire (HEY) Children’s University, the day was all about inspiring young minds and opening doors to future careers in the trades.
The Year 5 and 6 pupils, aged 9 to 10, took part in a series of hands-on workshops where they tried their hand at -
- joinery
- bricklaying
- painting and decorating
From building structures and laying bricks to mixing paints and exploring colour theory, the children were fully immersed in practical, creative learning. The day wrapped up with a health and safety session and a certificate presentation to celebrate their achievements.

Mrs Bentley, Year 5 teacher at St Charles', said -
“I can’t thank everyone enough. Today has been wonderful. I have loved seeing my children experience so many new things. This has opened their eyes to what they could do.”
Sarah Brodie, Partnerships Manager at HEY Children’s University, added -
“They really got stuck into the activities and thoroughly enjoyed a learning experience that was outside the classroom and truly practical.”
The visit was a brilliant example of how education and industry can come together to create meaningful, memorable experiences. Hull Training and Adult Education is proud to work with partners like Houlton and HEY Children’s University to help young people discover new skills and imagine exciting futures.
