By developing practical sewing skills in a supportive environment, Sue is building confidence, creativity and transferable skills that support everyday life and wellbeing.
Sue has developed valuable practical skills and confidence through learning to sew, supported by a welcoming and encouraging classroom environment.
Her journey began with a simple decision to try something new. After purchasing a sewing machine from a local craft shop, Sue decided to enrol on a course to learn how to use it properly. Starting with the basics, she has gradually built her skills and confidence through regular practice and guidance.
Since joining the course, Sue has completed a variety of projects, including pyjamas for her first grandchild, a handmade teddy, and a pinafore for herself. She has also learned how to carry out simple alterations, developing useful, transferable skills that can be applied in everyday life. By focusing on smaller projects, she is able to balance learning with other responsibilities while continuing to make steady progress.
Sue highlights the importance of the support she receives from both her tutor and fellow learners. The class provides a structured environment to develop new skills, while also encouraging independence and problem-solving - key attributes that can be applied beyond the classroom.
“I’ve learned skills I never thought I’d be able to do, and it’s really built my confidence. Having support from the tutor and the group makes such a difference, and it’s given me the confidence to keep practising at home and apply what I’ve learned in everyday life.”
Attending the course has taken on added significance during a challenging period in Sue’s personal life. Having previously worked full time, she is now spending more time at home while supporting her husband through cancer treatment. The class offers a positive and productive outlet, helping her maintain focus and build confidence during a time of change. Recently, she created cushions for her husband following an operation, demonstrating how her new skills can have a direct and meaningful impact.
The supportive group environment has also helped Sue stay motivated and engaged. She values both the learning and the opportunity to connect with others, recognising the importance of maintaining confidence and wellbeing while developing new skills.
Sue has taken further steps in her learning by setting up a dedicated sewing space at home, allowing her to practise independently and continue building her abilities outside of class. She travels from Greatfield each week to attend sessions, demonstrating her commitment to developing her skills.
Her experience shows how learning practical skills can support confidence, independence and personal development, while also equipping individuals with abilities that can be applied in a range of settings.
