After overcoming homelessness and unemployment, Edward returned to education at 45 to gain the qualifications he needs to progress in construction and build a more positive future.
Edward Horner, 45, is rebuilding his future through learning after overcoming significant personal and professional challenges.
After leaving school without English or maths qualifications, Edward spent more than 20 years working in the construction industry. His experience spanned a wide range of roles, including landscaping and general building work. While formal qualifications were not required in his earlier career, he recognised that gaining them would be essential to progress and access new opportunities.
Edward's circumstances changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. He moved from self-employment into working for a company but was later made redundant. At the same time, he lost his home, and his situation began to deteriorate. In October 2024, Edward became homeless, marking one of the most difficult periods in his life.
A turning point came when he was referred to the Tigers Trust, who provided support and guidance at a crucial time. Through this support, Edward was introduced to Hull Training and Adult Education (HTAE), helping him to regain stability and begin focusing on his future.
At 45, Edward made the decision to return to education. He knew he wanted to continue working in construction, with an interest in progressing into areas such as welding, but also understood that gaining English and maths qualifications was essential. Although he had the practical skills, formal qualifications were needed to move forward.
Edward enrolled on courses with HTAE, completing his Level 1 English qualification last year and progressing on to Level 2. Alongside this, he is also studying maths. Returning to learning has required commitment, but it has already had a positive impact on his confidence and outlook.
Since starting his courses, Edward has developed a renewed sense of purpose and direction. He is now focused on gaining the qualifications needed to support his career ambitions and create new opportunities for the future.
His journey demonstrates how, with the right support and determination, it is possible to overcome barriers and make a positive change at any stage in life.
I'm feeling much more confident and optimistic about the future now. You're never too old to learn something new and it's always good to broaden your horizons.
