Ings library official opening of sensory room with some of those involved

A brand-new community sensory area, known as The Lounge, has now officially opened at Ings Library following a joint effort between staff, partners and learners from Hull Training and Adult Education.

The project, which launched in time for World Book Day on Thursday 5 March 2026, began with the aim of refreshing a single room into a calming, creative sensory space for the local community. SEN classes from Ings Primary School visited for the opening and will be using the area for their weekly class visits.

What began as one small makeover soon grew. Thanks to the enthusiasm, teamwork and dedication of everyone involved, the project expanded to include a full redecoration of both the new sensory area and the library’s staff room.

The Lounge will now provide a welcoming environment for all ages, featuring cosy reading spots, soft toys, accessible IT equipment, sensory lighting and positive, uplifting messages displayed on the walls.

Level 1 Painting and Decorating apprentice Mia Clarkson, 16, who joined Hull Training and Adult Education in September after attending taster sessions, used the project to gain valuable hands-on experience.

“This is the first time I’ve worked on a community project like this,” said Mia. “It’s been really good to see the transformation and great to have some real-world experience of what painting and decorating is like ‘on the job’.

“We’ve been working on a new sensory room and also the staff room, which were very tired and ready for a new lease of life. I feel like my future is definitely in the trade and I hope to progress onto Level 2 and eventually find an employer.

“It’s been tiring, but a great experience and all the tutors have been supportive. During Covid, I kept myself busy with decorating projects at home and recently I’ve done some panelling in my room, from design to making and painting.”

Julie Sockett, library and information manager at Ings Library, praised the success of the project.

“We contacted Hull Training and Adult Education after receiving some community funding to create a sensory room and it’s been fantastic to see it come together,” Julie said.

“The learners have done everything – from preparation and furniture moving to completing the painting and tidying up afterwards. We originally planned for just one room to be decorated, but the group worked so efficiently that they were able to complete two.

“Their enthusiasm, professionalism and friendliness have been overwhelming. It’s been a brilliant opportunity for them to learn in a real working environment, and we are delighted with the results.”

The Lounge is now open and already proving to be a valued addition to Ings Library, offering a supportive, calming and accessible environment for the community to enjoy.
