As part of our ESOL Community Group, we took our learners on a visit to the National Avenue Allotments
Learners enjoyed a wonderful tour just before the start of the popular Autumnfest Scarecrow Festival, seeing first-hand the incredible variety of fruit and vegetables grown right here in Hull — including tomatoes, squashes, pumpkins, artichokes, courgettes, apples, pears, and even figs!
The visit followed recent group discussions about what learners grow in their gardens — both here and in their home countries — and they were eager to discover more about what thrives locally. Our learners enjoyed asking questions about gardening, plant identification, and the best growing conditions for different crops.
We were made to feel so welcome by the plot holders, who kindly shared their knowledge (and some tea and cake!) to round off a perfect morning.
A huge thank you to National Avenue Allotments for sharing such a beautiful and inspiring space with our learners — we’ll definitely be visiting again soon!
