Course Aims
Do you own an overlocker? Is it in regular use, or is it still lurking in its box, or perhaps banished, unthreaded, to the back of a cupboard?
Would you like to overcome overlocker terrors, refresh your skills, and pick up some new tips, or are you just fed up with only overlocking in white thread?
If the answer to any of the questions is ‘YES!’ then this six-week course is for you!
Come along, meet new people, learn new skills, have some fun time using your creativity…and make friends with your overlocker!

Course Content
Each week you will explore an aspect of overlocking.
You will practice the techniques and processes each session by creating a simple sewn item such as a cushion cover, origami bag, and other interesting pieces, using a standard sewing machine and the overlocker.
Some of the topics covered:
- Basics – safety, overlocker controls, settings and functions, needle types, and other useful things
- Change threads – in a simple way!
- Troubleshooting – a look at common problems
- Rethreading – starting with a naked machine, following the threading guide to replace threads from scratch!
- Sewing with jersey/knit fabrics – techniques for using the overlocker to construct stretch garments
This is a classroom-based, workshop-style, learning experience.

Assessment Method
This is a RARPA based course, assessment is carried out though building of a portfolio and taking part within tasks matched to the individual’s personal targets.
RARPA stands for Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement which is the process of assessment for non-accredited learning. It is a means of validating the outcomes of programmes which do not result in qualifications. RARPA is a five-stage process which measures and records learners’ progress, achievements and attendance.
Where can it lead?
You could progress on to further crafting, sewing and pottery/ceramics courses.
As a Hull Training and Adult Education learner, you have access to our Careers Advice Service. Our advisers are on hand to guide you through options and support you to achieve your full potential. Ask your tutor to refer you, if required.
