Course Aims

This course will teach you the basics of creative writing through the medium of short stories. By analysing narrative structure, characterisation, and theme, the course guides you through the process of writing your first full piece of short fiction.

Though focused primarily on short stories, the course will touch upon principles that are valuable to all narrative and written mediums.

Course Content

This eight-week course is structured to go over the various factors to consider when writing a short story in a systematic fashion. These include:

  • Finding inspiration and your voice
  • Narrative structures
  • Creating interesting characters
  • Maintaining a consistent tone
  • Creating interesting scenes
  • Proofreading and editing

Assessment Method

This is a RARPA based course, assessment is carried out though building of a portfolio and taking part within tasks matched to the individual’s personal targets.

RARPA stands for Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement which is the process of assessment for non-accredited learning. It is a means of validating the outcomes of programmes which do not result in qualifications. RARPA is a five-stage process which measures and records learners’ progress, achievements and attendance.
