Course Aims

Achieve an Entry Level 2 qualification by creating a range of seasonally inspired garden art in clay.

This fun, hands on course offers a welcoming and relaxed environment where you can meet likeminded people while enjoying the process of creating and learning.

Entry Requirements

For those with little/very basic hand-building knowledge and no other crafts qualifications who wish to develop new skills.   Ideal progression course from Tailored Learning.

Course Content

You will explore a range of straightforward yet effective techniques to achieve impressive outcomes. By the end of the six-week course, not only will you proudly display your finished decorative garden art, but you will also acquire the skills and know-how to undertake various other clay projects.

You will have the opportunity to embellish your pieces using underglazes and glazes. All necessary materials and tools will be supplied for your convenience. Your masterpieces will be ready for collection 2-3 weeks after the workshop concludes; we will notify you of the specific date and time for collection.

Week 1 – You will be introduced to the studio and the course, and practically learn how to make and add decorative detail to a garden plaque. You will use the Cutters for Clay plaques and stamps themed around gardens and homes to create a bespoke and unique piece of garden art.

Week 2 – You will complete your garden plaque and learn how to colour clay using slips and underglazes as well as etching skills.

Week 3 –In this fun session you will explore texture, clay bodies and learn about the properties of clays by using the Cutters for Clay plant Marker Cutters to develop your clay skills, awareness of clay handling and tips and techniques to enable successful hand building.

Week 4 – Develop your newly learned slip and score skills by creating a garden lantern using the Cutters for Clay easy to use cutters you will be able to make a unique piece of art with 3D embellishments.

Week 5 –You will develop and refine your lanterns or fairy houses, and learn how to successfully add small intricate details, patterns and textures. Etching, decorating and refining work at the leather hard stage.

Week 6 – Glazing health and safety and applying underglaze and glaze.

Assessment Method

You will be assessed by:

  • Tutor observation
  • Photographic evidence
  • Learner finished product

This course is intended to help you develop personal confidence with progression opportunities to further beginners throwing courses and NCFE Entry Level 3 Throwing on the Potters Wheels.
